South East Wales Shared Lives Scheme celebrated as a success

News | | Published: 17:00, Thursday March 26th, 2015.

A scheme that supports vulnerable people in the community has celebrated three years at its 2015 AGM.

The South East Wales Shared Lives Scheme provides support for people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, physical disabilities, sensory impairment, as well as older people.

Over the three years 209 carers have supported 267 people across Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport and Monmouthshire.

Carers Pauline and Chris Bell have provided long-term support for a young man in the scheme, helping him travel by train to Cardiff for the first time to see the Christmas lights.

This person had previously found travelling a stressful and traumatic experience, but with their care and support he was able to travel by train to Cardiff for the first time to see the Christmas lights.

This trip was so successful that Pauline and Chris are hoping to plan a trip to Euro Disney later this year.

Cllr Robin Woodyatt Cabinet Member for Social Services said: “I am delighted that the Shared Lives Scheme has grown so much and continues to receive a high level of support throughout South East Wales. Pauline and Chris have done an excellent job in improving the life of the service user that they care for and long may the Shared Lives Scheme continue”.

To become a carer you do not need to have particular qualifications or experience, but the right attitude and passion to provide excellent, meaningful support.

If you are interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer and making a difference, just like Pauline and Chris then please contact the South East Wales Shared Lives Scheme on 01443 864586.
