Plaid Cymru win Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn by-election

Plaid Cymru have won a by-election to take a seat from Labour on the Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn (PTE) Community Council.

The by-election, on April 2, was called following the death of Labour’s Reg Phillips.

Plaid Cymru’s Carl Coombes was elected with 340 votes, while Labour came second with 237 votes.

Councillor Steve Skivens, Plaid Cymru chair of PTE Community Council, said: “We’re delighted that the Penyrheol ward has returned Carl Coombes as a new community councillor and we congratulate him.

“We know Carl will work hard for people in the area. Voters were clearly in sympathy with Plaid Cymru’s anti-austerity agenda. They have had enough of public services being cut and there will be more spending cuts under a new Labour Westminster Government.

“People are seeing the progress Scotland has made under the SNP and a strong Plaid Cymru presence ensures the needs of Wales are always put first.”
