A team of would-be race engineers from Blackwood Comprehensive School have been placed first in South Wales as part of the F1 in Schools programme.

The Year 11 pupils created a model car made from balsa wood and plastic and powered by a small canister of compressed gas.

The car was raced on track and its performance measured.

The team, called ‘Unknown’ were placed third best in Wales and 13th in the UK.
More than 400 schools entered the competition.

The school hope to continue their success in the 2015/16 season.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I am delighted that team ‘Unknown’ have excelled.”

We can’t compete with the Asian industries on cost so we have to offer quality and innovation instead. This sort of thing sets an excellent example to school kids and gives them a good grounding in the tech we need as an economy to survive in the face of cheap imports. Well done to them I say.
British people tooling away in sheds has always brought us our great innovations and should always be encouraged but cant be relied upon forever. Research and development when properly funded and structured took Japan to it’s giddy heights, it could get us back there too.
More of this please Mr Gove.
