Visit Caerphilly Centre new home for town’s art gallery

News | | Published: 15:00, Friday April 17th, 2015.

A much-loved town centre gallery has expanded and moved to new premises.

Y Galeri was opened in Caerphilly town’s St Fagans Street three years ago and has proved to be a popular venue for art lovers.

This month the gallery is moving to its new home at the Visit Caerphilly Centre in the Twyn.

The ground floor space was previously occupied by transport charity Sustrans, but has now been transformed into a contemporary gallery.

The transformation will be complete in time for the official opening of the new gallery on Friday April 17 by Dr Kim Howells and the launch of its first exhibition.

Gallery owner Jan Pennel said: “We’ve had a really enjoyable three years on St Fagans Street. but we’re now ready for the next chapter. It was quite fortuitous that our lease was due to expire when the visitor centre space became available.

“Working in the town we know how popular the visitor centre and their tasteful coffee shop is, so this was an opportunity to move to the heart of the town.

“We have been welcomed by the manager and the staff at the visitor centre and we are looking forward to a mutually beneficial working relationship.

“Our ethos is to support Welsh artists and Welsh makers and our plan is to continue to do this and build on the success we’ve achieved so far. It’s onwards and upwards we hope.”

The first exhibition to adorn the new walls is entitled Colour of India – a touring exhibition of work by Porthmadog glass artist Bill Swann.

With Arts Council of Wales funding, Bill and his wife travelled to Kolkata and Jaipur for a month. He became hooked on the vibrancy and bustle of the country and this inspired him to create the body of work. His work contains images within the varying layers of glass, and reflect the surprise around each corner that unfolds as more of India is experienced.

Y Galeri opens to the public on Saturday April 18.

Opening hours will be 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

The Colour of India exhibition will run until May 16.

• This year sees the 20th anniversary of the Visit Caerphilly Centre and to mark the occasion a new website has been launched to promote tourism in the area.
