A 300 hectare deliberate grass fire in Wattsville, near Crosskeys, has been extinguished after nearly 24 hours alight.

The blaze, that covered grass and gorse the size of 420 football pitches, was started yesterday, April 22, and crews  worked throughout the night to keep nearby homes safe.

A total of 12 fire engines and water bowsers, as well as a mobile command unit, were sent to the incident on Wednesday night.

This morning a helicopter was launched to help tackle the fire from the air and once under control the blaze was allowed to burn out.

It was finally extinguished just after 2pm today, April 23.

There have been 127 deliberate grass fires in Caerphilly County Borough since April 1, and 776 across the whole of South Wales.

No arrests have been made by Gwent Police.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer, Huw Jakeway, has urged the public “not to put themselves in harm’s way by tackling these fires”.

He thanked the public for their support but urged them to stay safe after reports that residents were acting as spotters to hunt fires and catch arsonists.
