Two Caerphilly County Borough, students studying at Coleg Y Cymoedd have won national awards in recognition of their work.

Zac Timothy, from Markham, was crowned Guild of Bricklayers Junior Welsh Champion at the guild’s annual bricklaying competition.

The 18-year-old who is studying Level Two Bricklaying at the college’s Ystrad Mynach campus beat off rivals from 11 other colleges in the five hour contest to build the best brick wall.

Mr Timothy said:  “The competition was really challenging, especially as it was my first time in a competitive situation.

“When the judges were announcing the 2nd and 3rd places my heart was pounding, and when they announced my name in first place I couldn’t believe it. I was chuffed.”

Meanwhile Alycia Pritchard from Caerphilly, along with Scarlett Clarke, were given the accolade of Best Experimental Film at the Zoom Cymru Young Film Makers Awards.

The final year students of Creative Media Production at Coleg y Cymoedd’s Nantgarw campus, wowed the judges with a film that commemorates the centenary of World War One.

The film, called Goodbye Mam is an emotional tale of a mother and her son sending letters to each other during the war, and eventually saying goodbye.

Ms Pritchard, 20, said: “It was completely surreal to win. It felt like a great achievement especially as the other films in our category were really good.

“It was amazing to see the creativity of all the film makers there, some even as young as ten. I’m really glad my tutor encouraged us to enter the awards.”

Well done to Zac, Wales needs more good young skilled trades people – there’s more than enough bad brickies to go around but very few good ones, if he keeps up the good work he’ll soon be in demand.
