Police officers, staff and members of the public were honoured at the 2015 Gwent Police awards ceremony last night, May 13.

Chief Constable Jeff Farrar and the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Ian Johnston presented the awards at the Christchurch Centre in Newport.

Police officers, police staff, special constables, volunteers and members of the public who have demonstrated commitment to improving local communities, investigating crimes and even saving lives were celebrated.

DC Toni-Marie Stimpson, DC Jaime Lewis, DC Jolene Podmore and DS Leigh Holborn were awarded for their work bringing Michael Pearce to justice.

Pearce was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to nine years in prison for killing six-week-old baby Alfie Sullock.

DI Nicholas Wilkie was part of a team of officers who investigated the fire at the former Poundstretcher premises in Blackwood.

The officers conducted detailed checks of all CCTV in the area, as well as phone analysis and financial enquiries. One man was charged with arson and later found guilty at trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

An award was given to SC Ewan Turner who gave life saving first aid to a woman who had cut herself in the Caerphilly area.

PC Alistair Phillips, PC David Tomsa, PC Mark Williams and PC Alan Cotterell were recognised for performing CPR on a woman in Bargoed who had taken a drugs overdose.

A member of the public, Donna Hagerty, was honoured after she stopped a woman trying to drown herself in the river in  Ystrad Mynach, while citizen Aaron Edwards called police and assisted them in arresting a violent offender in the New Tredegar area.

The Outstanding Contribution to Local Policing Award went to CSO Matthew Pearce from the Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team.

He has worked to address anti-social behaviour and introduce fun activities for young people to take part in to distract them from crime.

Chief Constable Jeff Farrar said: “I am delighted to award commendations to police officers and police staff, as well as members of the public, that have gone over and above what we expect from them on a daily basis.

“There are excellent examples of selfless acts of bravery, painstaking criminal investigations and outstanding community service.

“I would like to thank everyone receiving an award for their efforts to make Gwent an even safer place.”

PCC Ian Johnston, said: “Whether it is officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty or members of the public who are willing to step up to help others in need, it’s important that we recognise the bravery and commitment of these special people who serve their community so well.

“I have been humbled by the ‘can do’ attitude of all of the recipients and I would like to congratulate them on their awards.”
