Ex-Irish PM Bertie Ahern visits Risca Comprehensive School

News | | Published: 17:00, Monday June 15th, 2015.

Risca Comprehensive School pupils were visited by former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern recently, who gave pupils his three top tips for success.

The Fianna Fáil, or Republican Party, politician was integral in the Irish peace process that led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

He was invited by Islwyn MP Chris Evans and held a Q&A with pupils, saying his tips for success are to have confidence, to work hard, and to stay calm.

He also discussed his sense of achievement after negotiating peace in Northern Ireland while also remaining part of his local community.

Speaking after the event, Mr Evans MP said: “I was delighted that Bertie took time out of his busy schedule and accepted my invitation to visit this constituency.

“All too often political leaders are seen as distant figures confined to television screens.

“However I feel it is very important, especially for the younger generation, to have the opportunity to have a glimpse of and be inspired by the real people behind the headlines.”
