iPhone repairman from Risca prosecuted by Trading Standards

News | | Published: 14:16, Thursday January 14th, 2016.

A mobile phone repairman has been ordered to pay almost £2,150 by magistrates following a prosecution by Caerphilly Trading Standards.

Ryan Thomas Newell, aged 29, of Cromwell Street, Risca, was taken to court following a complaint by a customer who had their iPhone screen replaced by him.

Newell, trading as Ryan@PCRepairs, told her the replacement screen was a genuine Apple part, but it broke on several occasions. The customer was told she would have to pay for any future repairs.

She took the phone to Apple, who told her the screen was unlikely to be genuine.

After the complaint, Trading Standards bought a battery and cover for different iPhones from Newell and were later told by Apple that both were counterfeit.

Newell appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday, December 18, and pleaded guilty to two charges under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and three under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations.

He was fined a total of £1,025, ordered to pay costs of £998.65 and a victim surcharge of £21. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation.
