The family of a care worker, killed during a terrorist shooting in Tunisia, are yet to come to terms with her death one year on.

Care home worker Ms Jones, 51, from Blackwood, was killed on June 26 last year when gunman Seifiddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the resort of Port El Kantaoui, around 10km north of the city of Sousse, killing 38 people.

Ms Jones was among 30 Britons who were killed during the attack.

The mother-of-four and grandmother had been holidaying with friends and had been due to return home a few days after the attack.

A year on from the tragedy, Ms Jones’ family spoke to the media about their loss.

Trudy’s eldest son Gavin Davis told WalesOnline: “We still haven’t come to terms with what happened.

“None of us have accepted it – we still feel like we’re waiting for her to come home.”

Trudy was an activities co-ordinator at Highfield Nursing Home in Blackwood and according to colleagues, she was a “lively and popular” member of staff who was devoted to the people in her care.

The residents at the home, many of whom are elderly and infirm, were devastated by the news of Trudy’s death – a woman they described as an “absolute angel”.

Ms Jones’ work at the care home was honoured in November last year at the Wales Care Awards.

Mr Davis added: “We feel so proud of her, especially when we see how much she meant to the residents at the care home.

“Being a carer was the natural job for her – she was always looking out for people and she put everyone before herself.”

Ms Jones, and the other victims of the shooting, were all remembered at a special memorial service held at Westminster Abbey in London in April this year.

Speaking during the service, the Very Reverend Dr Hall said: “We remember with thanksgiving those whose lives were brutally cut short.

“We honour the courage of those who survived and the families of those who suffered.

“We share our grief with victims of attacks from other countries and their families.”

Candles were lit and placed on the altar in memory of the victims by their family and friends.
