A Bargoed man who drove a car on the wrong side of the road during the dark with no headlights in an 80mph police chase has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Daniel Wangiel, 27, of Heol-y-Mynydd, sped off from police after they approached his Honda Civic following reports that he had damaged cars while speeding in a residential street.

Newport Crown Court was told the car was seen in a lay-by during the early hours of June 17 last year. Police gave chase when Wangiel, a disqualified driver, drove off. The car chase reached speeds of up to 80mph in the dark and at times Wangiel drove on the wrong side of the road and without headlights.

Police used a stinger device and Wangiel eventually abandoned the car. Cannabis and amphetamines worth around £4,800 were found in the car and Wangiel was later arrested by officers at his home, where he claimed the car had been stolen.

At a sentencing hearing on Friday, January 19, the court was told that Wangiel went on to commit two further offences while he was on bail. The first was on August 24 when he failed to stop for police at traffic lights and the second was on January 13 this year when he threatened to burn down the home of the person he was staying with as part of his bail conditions.

For drug dealing offences he was jailed for 16 months, for motoring offences including dangerous driving he got 12 months and for the threatening arson he was sentenced to 14 months. The sentences will run consecutively which means he was jailed for a total of 42 months.

He had admitted the charges at a previous hearing and was also disqualified from driving for four years and nine months.

His driving ban should start the day that he leaves prison. He cant drive while he is in the nick. So its not really a punishment.

If a person abuses a pet, then they are banned for life from owning a pet, same should apply, he shouldn’t be on the road… ever.
