Gilfach Netball Club under-12s celebrate their success

Gilfach Netball Club’s under-12s have won the Welsh Netball National Club Competition, which was held in Bangor on Saturday, May 11.

Gilfach finished top of their pool to advance to the quarter-finals, where they beat Llantrisant 12-8. They then beat reigning-champions Deeside 11-7 in the semi-finals.

Gilfach went on to became champions of Wales when they beat Cardiff-based team Eastside 13-8 in the final.

It is the first national competition that the team has won.

Coach Rachel James said: “They were brilliant and nothing phased them. They didn’t lose a game, which is unheard of.

“I’m extremely proud. It was one of the best moments of my life.

“The girls had been training for three hours a week and playing friendly games. They’ve given 110%.

James added: “This is great for a little club like us.

“We’re now looking to reclaim the title next year.”

Lisa Price, whose daughter is part of the team, said: “It was absolutely phenomenal. It was a long day but it was worth the trip.”

Meanwhile, Pengam Netball Club won the Under 12s plate at the competition.

In the under-14s event, which was held the next day, Newbridge finished runners up in the plate competition.
