The Rhymney rail line has reopened after it was closed due to flooding, Transport for Wales has said.
As of 11am today, Saturday February 29, both Network Rail and Transport for Wales said the line was open but that there would be disruption and delays throughout the the day.
TfW had earlier said there would be no service on the line today and that there were no buses available to offer a road service.
The disruption has been brought on by recent heavy rain, compounding problems from last weekend’s Storm Dennis flooding.
The service was also affected yesterday for several periods because of flooding on the line.
Bethan Jelfs, customer delivery director for Transport for Wales Rail Services, and Chris Pearce, Network Rail’s Head of Operations for Wales and the Borders said:
“Following flooding at a number of locations across Wales caused by heavy and sustained rain falling on already saturated ground, our frontline teams are working round the clock to reopen affected lines as soon as possible.
“A number of lines remain closed however, and with Storm Jorge set to bring strong winds of up to 75 mph on Saturday, Transport for Wales and Network Rail are urging all customers to check their journeys prior to travel and allow plenty of time for their journey.
“From Saturday afternoon we’re expecting very stormy conditions and high winds that have the potential to uproot trees and damage infrastructure, so there will be speed restrictions on certain lines on our network between 3pm and 8pm on Saturday, February 29, which may cause delays.
“With limited replacement road transport available to us it’s inevitable that some services will be subject to disruption which will result in delays and cancellations.
“We are working closely together to minimise any disruption and will do all we can to keep our customers moving and informed but the situation is changing all the time and therefore services are likely to be disrupted with last minute alterations. Customers are advised to check their journey before travelling on nationalrail.co.uk or journeycheck.com/tfwrail
“Should customers not be able to travel today their tickets will be accepted and be valid for travel on Sunday and Monday.
“We would like to thank customers in advance for their patience and understanding.”
