A 20-year-old man has been jailed for five years and three months after he stabbed another man in the chest – missing his heart by just 1cm.

David Young, 20, attacked 23-year-old Brandon Masterson, from Cwmcarn, in the Pantside area of Newbridge on May 28, using a kitchen knife with a 7in to 8in blade.

Young, of Bryncoed Terrace, Penpedairheol, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court last month, where he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, as well as possession of an offensive weapon.

The victim was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport after the stabbing, with a wound in his chest 4cm deep. He was later discharged.

PC Christiane Fortt, of Gwent Police, said: “Young deliberately set out to attack his victim while he was sat in his car.

“The victim sustained a stab wound to his chest and was lucky not to have suffered more serious consequences.”

PC Fortt added: “The sentence given reflects the seriousness of this offence and the impact it had on the victim and local community.  I hope it provides some closure and reassurance to all those affected.”

Young was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £190 upon release. The victim surcharge goes towards the Victim and Witness General Fund, which provides funding for victim services.
