Pubs banned from selling alcohol and told to close by 6pm

Pubs, cafes and restaurants in Wales will no longer be able to sell alcohol as part of new measures announced by Welsh Government.

The new restrictions come into effect from 6pm on Friday, December 4, and will also require pubs, cafes and restaurants to close by 6pm.

Speaking at the Welsh Government’s coronavirus press briefing on Monday, November 30, First Minister Mark Drakeford said the new restrictions will be vital to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the lead up to Christmas.

Shops will still be required to stop selling alcohol by 10pm.

There will be no changes to other measures such as extended households, with restrictions set to be reviewed on December 17.

The First Minister also announced £340million worth of additional support to businesses affected by the new restrictions.

A new £160million “restrictions business fund” will be available for up to 60,000 businesses across Wales, while a further £180million will be targeted at hospitality, tourism and leisure businesses specifically.

Grants of up to £100,000 will be available for small and medium sized enterprises, while £150,000 will be available for larger businesses.
