Trethomas Bluebirds manager Mark Dunford has described his excitement ahead of their first game of the season against Cwmbran Celtic in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Bluebirds, who only lifted the Ardal South East title in May having lost just two league games.

Despite a “shorter than ideal” preseason, Dunford told Caerphilly Observer how he was happy with what he had seen, and is excited to get underway: “It was key for us to give the players and staff a break after the effort we put in last season.

“It’s been shorter than ideal, but we’ve worked hard and four friendlies felt like the right amount ahead of an early start.”

One of those four friendlies was coincidentally against Cwmbran Celtic, who are a fellow Cymru South side managed by former Risca United manager, Simon Berry.

Cwmbran finished ninth in the league last season, and will hope to continue their progression under the vastly experienced Berry.

Dunford continued: “We won’t be taking much from that match, it was very early on with both sides quite experimental and missing players.”

The Bluebirds will be missing a few players themselves tomorrow according to Dunford, who said nobody could have expected to play so soon in the year.

Trethomas have bolstered their squad heading into their debut Cymru South season however; five new signings in total so far with some providing experience in both the Cymru South and Cymru Premier.

“The creation of our U19s section has been an important step in our progression and I’ve heard good things so far.

“I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on those players this season and see a pathway for those who standout, especially as we now have a transfer window which closes at the end of August.”

Asked how seriously the Bluebirds will be taking cup competitions in their first season of second tier football, Dunford added: “It’s true we had a plan in place last year where we knew promotion was our goal, but this season it’s a whole new experience for us.

“There are new cups and new teams we can play so we’ll definitely look to be competitive in every game.”

Finally, Dunford was asked about his feelings ahead of the club’s biggest ever season: “I never thought I’d say it after the draining season we just finished but I can’t wait.

“I don’t really feel like I’ve stopped, but it in a way it keeps you focussed and involved in everything going on. We’re looking forward to representing the club as players and coaches.”

Trethomas travel to Celtic Park tomorrow (Saturday July 20), to face Cwmbran for a 12.30pm kick-off.
