Gerwyn Price has won his third Premier League Darts night of the year after demolishing Michael van Gerwen in Newcastle on Thursday March 23.

Fresh from last week’s victory in Nottingham, Price defeated Van Gerwen 6-1 in the final – cutting the Dutchman’s lead at the top of the table to seven points while denying him a fourth Premier League victory in the space of five weeks.

Price began the evening with an all-Welsh affair, convincingly beating Jonny Clayton 6-1, before beating Chris Dobey 6-4 in the semi-finals.

In the final, 2021 world champion Price, from Markham, pounced on early errors from van Gerwen to go 2-0 up, before winning three straight legs in 12, 13 and ten darts to move to the brink of victory.

Van Gerwen pulled a leg back, but all hopes of an improbable comeback were dashed when Price responded with his second ten-darter of the tie to clinch the win.

In the process, Price achieved the Premier League’s highest match average since 2017.

“I’ve played really well over the last few weeks,” Price said after the win.

“It’s nice when you can play like that, particularly against Michael, because you need those type of performances to win.

“I’m grateful it happened in the final. I slipped up once and Michael won the leg. I just wish I won 6-0.”

Price continued: “I’m in a good position, but every night is worth five points, so with this format, it’s not over yet.

“Every time you’re winning you are enjoying it. You get momentum, you get confidence and hopefully it continues, but there’s a long way to go yet.”

Price currently sits second in the Premier League table on 18 points, behind only Van Gerwen on 25 points.

The Premier League returns for night nine on Thursday March 30 in Berlin, where Price will be opening against 2022 world champion Peter Wright.
