This weekend’s Blackwood Winter Fair has been called off following a Met Office weather warning.

The event was due to be held in the town centre on Saturday November 23. However, as Storm Bert approaches, strong winds and rain have been forecast.

In a statement, Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We have no option but to cancel the event, as safety is paramount to the organisation of all our events and in order to give traders, suppliers and visitors adequate time to rearrange their plans.”

The local authority continued: “Please remember to support Blackwood town centre on the lead up to Christmas. The businesses were looking forward to the increased footfall the winter fair brings so remember to visit them.”

While the event in Blackwood will not go ahead, planned events in Caerphilly town centre on November 30, and Bargoed on December 7, are still set to go ahead.

Lantern making workshops at the Twyn Community Centre in Caerphilly on Saturday November 23 and Sunday November 24 are still going ahead, the council has confirmed – alongside a similar lantern making event in St Gwladys Church in Bargoed on Saturday.
