New Tredegar man denies murder after Facebook row

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:51, Tuesday September 8th, 2009.

A New Tredegar man accused of murdering his partner after she changed her Facebook status from married to single has told a court he had not planned to stab her.

Brian Lewis, 31, of New Tredegar, denies the murder of 26-year-old Hayley Jones and broke down while on the stand at Cardiff Crown Court today.

Ms Jones, 26, was found stabbed at the family home by her children in March 2007.

The prosecution claims Lewis strangled and stabbed Ms Jones at their home in the Phillipstown area on March 12.

On March 2, she changed her Facebook status from married to single and she made it clear their relationship was over

The court was told that Lewis attacked Ms Jones with a kitchen knife at 4am as she was asleep on the sofa.

He then called police telling them to come to the address but fled.

He later gave himself up at Blackwood Police Station.

Lewis was asked in court today if he had deliberately set out to stab his partner, to which he replied “no”.

He also said earlier threats to kill Ms Jones had been made “in drink”.
