A new state-of-the-art indoor training pitch has bee unveiled at New Tredegar Leisure Centre.

Children were among the first to make use of the 3G artificial pitch at its official opening on Monday. The pitch is believed to be the first local authority-created indoor pitch of its kind which has been passed by the International Rugby Board.

John Griffiths AM, The Minister for Culture and Sport, and the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council Michael Gray officially opened the facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “The impressive pitch is yet another welcome enhancement to the facility following the total refurbishment back in 2009.

“The much-loved centre is well-used by the local community and we hope the completion of the works will encourage even more schools, groups and clubs to utilise this unique centre.”

He added: “The investment demonstrates our commitment to the future of sporting excellence within Caerphilly county borough and is the first completion of a number of flagship projects. Promoting sport and physical activity forms part of the council’s wider priorities. To ensure we are able to successfully achieve this we are striving to create fit for purpose facilities to nurture our current and future sporting heroes.”

Sports Minister Mr Griffiths added: “It’s very good for me as a Minister to see this new facility in place with such a good quality surface that I know is going to be well used by rugby clubs, football clubs, local youngsters and the community in general.”

The artificial surface is suitable for both full contact rugby and football and will provide a popular practice and training facility for both sports.
