Fun runners are being encouraged to sign up for this year’s Great Cheese Race, being held as part of Caerphilly town’s annual Big Cheese festival.

Being held on the weekend of July 25, the festival starts with a bang as teams compete on the Friday evening carrying a big cheese around the grounds of Caerphilly Castle.

Children and adults can take part in the fun run with fancy dress adding to the enjoyment.

Every year scores of teams line up to take part in the race in teams of four,

Last year organisers had a record number of entrants for the event, and are hoping to exceed it this year. All entrants will receive a certificate and medal, with overall winners for best fancy dress.

For further information, or to request an entry form, email events@caerphilly.gov.uk.

Before the Great Cheese Race though, the town will be hosting the second Caerphilly 10k road race on June 22.

One runner undertaking the challenge will be Bedwas resident Laura Lees.

Laura, 33, who works for charity Deafblind Cymru, will be taking part in the event wearing glasses that replicate an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and ear defenders to replicate being hard of hearing.

She said: “I work with people with combined sight and hearing loss on a daily basis. I can see the challenges they face throughout their everyday lives and how just trying to do the simplest of tasks can be a struggle. I decided to run with ear defenders and simulation specs, to represent combined sight and hearing loss.”

For more information about entering the Caerphilly 10k visit your.caerphilly.gov.uk/10k or call 02920 880011.

Affiliated club runners pay £12 while unattached runners fees are £14. For online entries there is also a £1.50 booking fee.
