Islwyn MP stresses the importance of oral history

News | | Published: 12:00, Wednesday October 17th, 2018.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has called for people to record the oral history of the South Wales Valleys after visiting the Crumlin Navigation Colliery.

Mr Evans said that the mining industry had a huge impact on communities. Therefore, it was very important to record the experiences of local people.

One attempt to record these stories is by The Crumlin Navigation Colliery who have compiled an oral history project called Crumlin stories.

Mr Evans has previously called on everyone in Islwyn to sit down with an older family member, neighbour or friend to record their stories.

Mr Evans said: “It is crucial that we record the oral history of our valleys, so that future generations can learn about the history of the area.

“We must preserve the important history of our mines, by recording stories from friends and family.”
