Public Health Wales has been made aware of another 47 cases of coronavirus in Caerphilly County Borough, the latest headline figure reveals.

This figure, released on Monday (September 14), shows how many new cases Public Health Wales (PHW) was made aware of on Sunday (September 13).

The latest headline figure shows 183 new cases reported across Wales – with no new deaths.

Here is what has to happen for lockdown restrictions to be lifted

For comparison, there were 42 new confirmed cases in Rhondda Cynon Taf, 12 in Cardiff and six in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough.

Meanwhile, 14 new cases have been recorded in Newport, six in Torfaen, four in Blaenau Gwent and none in Monmouthshire.

In the last seven days, PHW has been made aware of 167 new cases in Caerphilly – the highest of any local authority area in the same time period.

Caerphilly was placed under a local lockdown by Welsh Government on Tuesday, September 8, with temporary test centres set up at Caerphilly Leisure Centre and the council offices in Penallta.

Speaking at Welsh Government’s coronavirus press briefing on September 14, Health Minister Vaughan Gething revealed there had been an increase in the number of people aged in their 40s or 50s catching the virus.

What does ‘headline figure’ mean?

In recent weeks, Caerphilly Observer and other media have been reporting the headline figures from Public Health Wales.

For example, the headline figure released on Monday, September 14, saw 47 new positive tests reported.

This figure however is not entirely as it seems at first glance. It is the number of new cases PHW were aware of as of September 13 – the day before.

Even then, this figure is still not what you think it ought to be as it includes positive tests that may have occurred a few days prior, but that PHW were only made aware of on September 13.

The headline figure for Caerphilly County Borough for September 14 (which was published on September 13) is 47 new cases.

“Refund all Caerphilly holidaymakers” Welsh Government tells travel industry

The latest spreadsheet containing the detailed data, which can be downloaded from the PHW stats website, actually shows no new cases for September 13, with only seven for September 12.

This is because the 47 cases were actually tested for a few days prior, but PHW only became aware of them on September 13. We will have a far more accurate reflection of what has been going on in the last few days over the course of the next week.

However, the figures do show the week up to September 13 saw 167 new cases of coronavirus in Caerphilly County Borough. The week prior to that (August 31 to September 6) saw 98. The week before that (August 24 to August 30) saw 46. There were just eight cases recorded between August 17 and August 23.
