Gerwyn Price has secured first place in the Premier League Darts standings after reaching the Night 16 final in Aberdeen on Thursday.
Price, from Markham, headed to Scotland for the final round of the competition’s league phase knowing he would top the standings if he reached the final.
He did exactly that, seeing off Scotsman Peter Wright 6-2 in the quarter-finals before a 6-3 semi-final win over Nathan Aspinall set up a showpiece with Belgium’s Dimitri van den Bergh.
It was the ninth time Price has reached a Premier League Darts final this year, but a slender 6-5 defeat to the Belgian meant the Iceman was unable to add to his four victories in Cardiff, Nottingham, Newcastle and Brighton – and missed out on the £10,000 winners bonus.
The night also saw Welshman Jonny Clayton, from Carmarthenshire, secure the last play-off spot, at the expense of Aspinall.
Clayton joins Price, reigning world champion Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen in the play-offs, which are being held at London’s O2 Arena on Thursday May 25.
It’ll be an all-Welsh affair in the play-off semi-finals in London, with Price taking on Clayton – with the winner facing one of Smith or Van Gerwen for the £275,000 prize.
