Young people from Caerphilly County Borough’s Youth Forum have celebrated its tenth anniversary.

A total of 86 youngsters representing schools, youth projects, voluntary organisations and youth clubs from across the county borough came together at the Maes Manor Hotel in Blackwood for the forum’s annual conference.

A number of guest delegates also attended, including the leader of the council Lindsay Whittle and the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr James Fussell.

Cllr Whittle said: “I was delighted to be invited along to join the young people as they debated some very important subject areas at their annual conference.

“Young people are our future and it is pleasing to see they are taking such an active interest in areas that affect us all, at such a young age.”

A number of important issues were discussed on the day, and an online poll will now take place to determine the Youth Forum’s priority area over the forthcoming year.

The shortlist of priorities for 2010/11 are:

  • Challenging peer pressure – being able to say NO to drugs and alcohol (Health issue)
  • Combating the amount of litter in schools and local communities (Environmental issue)
  • Changing the way young people are taught – varied teaching styles and making lessons more practical (Education issue)
  • Schools sharing budgets for better educational opportunities (Regeneration issue)

The Youth Forum is encouraging all young people in the county borough to get involved by visiting and voting at www.caerphilly.gov.uk/youth before November 3.
