Supermarket giant Tesco has marked the opening of its new store in Risca by donating £1,000 to two local charities.
The new 24 hour Tesco Extra, on Pontymister Industrial Estate, opened its doors to shoppers on Monday.
Representatives from the 5th Risca Scout Group and the Risca St John Ambulance brigade each received a £500 donation from store manager Paul Cartlidge.
Mr Cartlidge said: ”It was great we were able to make donations to both 5th Risca Scout Group and the Risca St John Ambulance.
“My team and I sincerely hope the donations have a positive impact on both groups.”
Wendy Gray, Group Scout Leader for 5th Risca, said: “We are thrilled with the donation and had a great time at the store launch. The money will be really helpful and will go towards replacing our old camping equipment.”
Work on the site of the former foundry, off Newport Road, began in June this year after councillors agreed plans for the superstore in November last year.
Last month it was revealed that more than 2,500 people had applied for 350 jobs at the new 24-hour store.
