A gardening and wildlife project has received a £215 donation from Sainsbury’s Community Grant.
Windy Ridge horticultural project is a Caerphilly County Borough Council social services gardening and wildlife community based day service that provides vocational training to adults with learning disabilities.
Windy Ridge was established in 2001 in partnership with Llanfrechfa League of Friends and started out as a small allotment which has now grown into a much larger resource with poly tunnels, raised vegetable beds, an orchard area plus sensory garden and wildlife pond.
Windy Ridge has won many awards at local horticultural shows for their fruit, vegetable and floral displays and last year won second prize in the Caerphilly In Bloom competition allotment category.
The Sainsbury’s Community Grant scheme is funded by sales of ‘Bags of Life’ at the Pontllanfraith store.
Several members of Sainsbury’s staff met with service users to present the donation, store manager Rachel Davies said: “When we heard about Windy Ridge Gardening Project we were really pleased to be able to help out.”
Service user, Anthony Williams thanked the staff and said: “I really enjoy coming to Windy Ridge and have learnt so much about plants and wildlife.”

Hayley Stevens, Senior Community Support Worker received the donation on behalf of the project. “This donation will help towards purchasing seeds so that we can hopefully repeat our success at this years In Bloom competition,” she said.
