Conservative AM raises issue of road safety with Welsh Government

A Conservative AM has raised the issue of road safety in the Senedd after a spate of fatal accidents.

William Graham, AM for South Wales East, requested a statement on motorcyclist safety from the Welsh Government during Plenary at the National Assembly for Wales yesterday.

Mr Graham asked “Will the Minister for Local Government and Communities make a statement on ensuring the safety of road users; in particular motorcyclists?”

“This is a Wales-wide issue. Approximately five motorcyclists every week are killed or seriously injured. On the last two weekends there have been fatal motorcycle accidents in South Wales East; together with another accident where an injured motorcyclist was required to be taken to hospital by helicopter”.

“Our sympathies go out to those families involved”.

“I would be grateful if the Minister would include in his statement how our Police Forces are co-ordinating road safety; especially during the summer months when more people are attracted to using motorcycles.”

Mr Graham’s request follows the death of 28-year-old Christopher Morgan from Nelson who died after being involved in a crash on the A468 in Lower Machen on Sunday May 27.

Mr Morgan was riding a motorcycle when it was involved in a collision with a camper van. He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport where he later died.

On Sunday May 20, Luke Samuel Grace, aged 20 from Oakdale, was killed in a crash on a roundabout near Pontypool.

Mr Grace suffered fatal injuries when his bike collided with a dark coloured Ford Fiesta on the McDonald’s roundabout on the junction between the A472 and A4042.
