I take my tablet everywhere with me. How do I keep my data safe if I lose it? Is there something that will help me find it again?
You cannot lock a door that has no lock fitted – you need to set a password or Pin in the device so that the apps can then use this.
To find a lost device you need to ensure that it has location services switched on so the app is able to “tell us where it is”.
Go to the Settings menu to find password and location services (under Privacy) and then download a suitable app.
For Apple products (iPad,iPhone etc) just follow the Apple instructions.
For Android devices there are a number of paid and unpaid apps that can be downloaded – I use AVG Antivirus Free for Tablets, but BT released an article a while back singing the praises of Lookout. I gather that both apps are also compatible with Huddle and the Kindle fire. A nice touch with the AVG is that it emails all details of the device, along with instructions of how to find it, to an email of your choice – obviously one not set up on that device.
The Get Caerphilly Online campaign runs sessions across the borough to support people to get online and use technology.

This answer is missing two of the most important pieces of information.
1. Make sure you use passwords and not pass-codes which are commonly comprised of 4 digits. With 4 digits, a person wanting entry can see the numbers and enter the 24 possible combinations (this is because the on-screen keypad always appears in the same place). Passwords are more difficult to guess.
2. Limit the number of failed attempts. Have you tablet wipe all data after ten failed attempts at entering your password. All data will then be lost and not stolen.
3. To locate a missing tablet, download an app that syncs with another device of yours like your mobile phone. You can then use your mobile phone to pinpoint where your tablet is. Make sure ‘use current location’ is enabled, your device will always keep track of where it is then and is easier to locate using a sister device.
Hi Dean,
Thanks for this reply and we agree with all 3 points. Good to get the discussion going. Would you have any time to help us with this maybe or are you happy to pick up on additional things?
Many thanks,
Matt Lloyd
