Police have thanked an on-the-run criminal for his role in helping them track him down, after he taunted them with “catch me if you can” on Facebook.

Logan Rhys James, 19, had been on the run for a week after he was released early from an eight month prison sentence for a street knife attack.

Gwent Police issued an appeal to track the teenager down after he breached the terms of his release licence and posted his picture on their Facebook page.

Underneath the online appeal, James posted: “Haha catch me if you can wont see me slipping [SIC].”

Prior to his arrest, James had bragged to a news agency that he would continue to give police the slip.
He said: “They are not going to be able to catch me – I won’t let them.

“They have been round my mum’s house four times a day but I’ll be out for at least a month or two before the get me.

“I’m still near my home and I haven’t seen any police yet. I have been walking around near home so they’re not trying too hard to catch me.”

James was handed his eight month sentence for wounding, affray, common assault and being in possession of a knife.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said the 19-year-old was arrested in Caerphilly at about 5.20pm on Sunday February 15 and has been returned to prison.

Superintendent Marc Budden said: “This demonstrates our commitment to finding and arresting people who fail to abide by the terms of their release from prison.

“Our officers had been making arrest inquiries to locate him and we had also been issuing appeals to trace him.
“We would like to thank the public, the media and Mr James himself for drawing attention to our efforts to return him to prison.”

If Mr James had been kept locked up where he should have been rather than being quite obviously wrongly resleased early then Gwent police would not have wasted their time and resources finding him and returning him to his prison cell. Perhaps somebody somewhere who should have known better will learn a valuable lesson from this farcical episode, or is that expecting too much from our justice system.
