A parents’ group that campaigns for Welsh medium education has backed a school’s stance over sixth form provision in Caerphilly basin.

The chair of RhAG (Parents for Welsh Medium Education) in Caerphilly has said it is right that a limited sixth form is available at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni’s Y Gwyndy site until demand increases.

Other parents had previously voiced their concerns that pupils were missing out because of the lack of a full sixth form.

The site will get a sixth form this September, but it will only be for one day a week for pupils studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Ben Jones, RhAG Caerffili Chair, said: “Schools are required to offer a range of 30 curricular studies in the sixth form and it’s quite clear to us that such a provision cannot be made for some 50 pupils.

“We therefore fully support the school governors and the local authority in the way they’ve mapped out sixth form provision for the whole school for the foreseeable future.

“As numbers increase, with 150 plus pupils enrolling each year in the Welsh medium primary schools feeding the Gwyndy site,so the potential increases for greater provision.”

He added: “Provision at the Gwyndy will develop, but a full sixth form there at this time is clearly an impossibility.”
