Doctor surgeries in Lansbury Park and Penyrheol will remain open while health bosses look for a replacement.
GPs are independent contractors tasked by the NHS to provide primary care services.
In this case, the GP, Dr Fakande has decided to retire and resign from the contract for the two surgeries, which looks after 3,962 registered patients.
Dr Fakande will remain until the end of April when the contract ends.
The health board will now advertise the Lansbury practice, with its Penyrheol branch, nationally to look for a replacement GP to take over the contract.
A spokesman for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board said: “The health board will ensure that all patients that are currently registered with Lansbury Surgery will have access to a GP practice from May 1 2020 and Dr Fakande will continue to deliver General Medical Services to patients as normal until the contract ends on April 30 2020.
“The health board’s Vacant Practice Panel met on Friday January 24 to discuss the options available.”
If a GP cannot be found, then the practice could remain open under health board control or close with patients transferring to other nearby surgeries.

Penyrheol councillor Lindsay Whittle, of Plaid Cymru, who first heard about the potential for the surgeries’ closure last year said: “If they closed, the impact on both communities would be catastrophic.”
Cllr Whittle said job losses would result if the surgeries closed and the viability of the chemists on both estates could be threatened.
He added: “Job losses and loss of services would have a major impact on these two council estates.
“It is of major concern to me and I will meet with the health board to fight for them.”
Caerphilly Assembly Member Hefn David and its Member of Parliament Wayne David have been discussing the issue with the health board.
Dr David AM said: “The health board have acknowledged the importance of the surgeries within those communities.
“I am fully supportive of the measures that are being taken to ensure the surgeries continue to run, now and in the future.
“I will be contacting the health board in the next few weeks as recruitment progresses.”
Closing these surgeries will be a disaster. A lot of the patients using these surgeries are not only elderly, but possibly may not got access to cars or public transport to travel to newly appointed Doctor Surgeries. We must not also forget the extension to the Hendredenny Estate with over 260 houses being built. What impact will this have on already overloaded Doctor’s, Dentists etc.
