Promotion hopefuls Trethomas Bluebirds expect a fiery opening clash against Aberbargoed Buds as they begin their campaign in the Ardal South East.

The Bluebirds finished fourth last season, missing out on their ultimate aim of promotion – but can still count the season as a success following their 2-1 win over Denbigh Town to lift the prestigious FAW Amateur Trophy.

Ahead of their opening derby clash against the newly promoted Aberbargoed Buds, Bluebirds manager Mark Dunford spoke to Caerphilly Observer. He said: “We missed out on this fixture last year due to the Buds being forced down a division, so we’re excited for this one – it should be a real curtain raiser.

“A few of our players and their players have played for both sides so that should make it a very competitive game; great for the neutral.”

“Team to beat”: Aberbargoed Buds confident ahead of new season

It hasn’t been the smoothest off-season for Trethomas however, losing their captain Tom Rutherford to Cwmbran Town, as well as having the usual difficulties of balancing players’ rest while preparing for the new season.

Dunford still remains positive however. He said: “We lost three players but we’ve brought in a couple who I’m really happy with. They show our ambition and will hopefully help us get over the line.

“We’ve played five games this pre-season which felt about right. Obviously we had a deep run in the cup and league last season so it was important to let the players reset mentally and physically, but we’re in a good place now.”

On the season ahead, Dunford is clear the Bluebirds have one goal: “We’re fully focused on promotion. I wouldn’t swap the last two years for anything with the success the club has had, it’s been an amazing experience, but we really want to push on to the next level.”

Trethomas Bluebirds host Aberbargoed at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach on Friday August 4, with the game kicking off at 7.45pm.
