Two Coleg Gwent netball teams triumphed in an international showdown at Crosskeys Campus last Thursday when they took on their South African counterparts.

Touring teams from South Africa called in to give the girls a run for their money but the Welsh girls proved they have the edge with the A team winning 31 – 28 and the B team taking victory in their match that ended 25 – 19.

Sixteen-year-old Chloe Turton from Treowen is no stranger to victory with the team, which won the South East Wales Schools Presidents Cup Tournament in February. Sophie is also a county player with the South East Wales Under 18 team and is in the Welsh College Netball Squad.

She said: “It was great to play the South African team, they were fast and furious and it was a worthwhile experience.”

Lecturer Emma Hurley said: “Both teams thoroughly enjoyed their games. The South African teams played a different style of game. They were dynamic, fast and very effective at communicating, they talked a lot.

“They had different skills that made us change our game play to counter act theirs in each quarter we played.

“It was great to play such a skilful team, making me think of vital changes from the start. They were very physical on the court but very polite, well mannered and respectful – a delight to host at the college.”
