Rugby Union: WRU National Leagues round-up

Sport | | Published: 15:22, Friday December 9th, 2016.

As the halfway point approaches in the WRU National Leagues, several sides from Caerphilly County Borough have a lot to be happy about.

Bucking that trend, Newbridge have struggled in the WRU Championship, just three points off bottom in tenth thanks to a 33-10 victory over base-side Duvant.

In National League Division 1 East, Nelson sit comfortably in second place, having won four of their last five league matches, including a 36-13 victory over Brecon on Saturday December 3.

Just below in third sit Penallta, who have a game in hand after their fixture at Abertillery was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Elsewhere in Division 1 East, Risca climbed to fifth, while Senghenydd failed to score for the second time in two matches, losing 65-0 to leaders Rhydyfelin.

In Division 2 East, just six points separate Ynysddu, Blackwood, and Abercarn in second, third and fourth position respectively. Abertysswg sit bottom, having failed to win since the first day of the season.

Oakdale and Caerphilly are locked in a battle for the summit of Division 3 East A, with the former three points ahead having played one game more.

Blackwood Stars and Fleur-de-Lys are struggling in ninth and tenth, while New Tredegar are yet to win this season, only kept off the bottom thanks to a single losing bonus-point.

Machen’s 59-21 win over Brynithel on Saturday December 3 opened up a 12 point gap at the top of Division 3 East B, with fellow borough sides Hafodyrynys, Aberbargoed, and Rhymney making up the top four.

Crumlin sit in 11th, but with three games in hand.

Pontllanfraith bring up the rear in Division 3 East C, as Markham fell from top to third, but remain within reach of the promotion spots, with Deri just below in fourth.
