Former Bedwas RFC forward Robson Blake has been forced to retire from rugby following a concussion suffered six months ago.
Blake, who has also played for Bedlinog RFC and made five appearances for the Dragons, took the decision following advice from medical professionals.
The 23-year-old flanker wrote on Twitter: “Not the news I wanted to share, but following a long six months off with concussion, I’ve been advised to retire from rugby.
“Thanks to Dragons Rugby for the opportunity to play professionally, and for their continued support. Thanks also to Bedlinog RFC and Bedwas RFC for all the happy memories playing club rugby.”
Blake also thanked his wife for “putting up with me during the dark days.”
Mark Lewis, Bedwas RFC’s Director of Rugby, said: “We were all saddened to hear that Robson was still suffering the affects of concussion.
“We have kept a close eye on Robson since he left Bedwas and we are even more saddened to hear that this injury has ended his career so early.
“We spotted Robson while he was playing for Bedlinog, it wasn’t difficult to spot him, as he was a big powerful ball carrier, very destructive going forward, but an excellent ball handler and all round rugby player.
“Robson had a great season with us, we put him in front of the Dragons early doors and as predicted he was signed by the by them the following season.
“It is really disappointing for him to end this way, and to lose a top talent for rugby. We wish him well with his recovery and all that he decides to do in the future.”
