Rhiw Syr Dafydd pupils lift the John Rees Cup at the Principality Stadium

Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School’s rugby team has lifted the John Rees Cup at the Principality Stadium following a 50-15 victory.

The school’s junior ten-a-side team defeated Carmarthenshire’s Ysgol Brynaman Primary School in the final to be crowned the best school side in Wales in their age category.

To reach the final, a mixture of Year 5 and 6 pupils from Rhiw Syr Dafydd, in Oakdale, played at a tournament in Dunvant, Swansea. There, the school won all four of their matches, scoring 19 tries and not conceding any.

The school’s headteacher, Craig George, said: “I am extremely proud of the whole school community.

“To be crowned as Welsh Under-11 School Champions is an incredible achievement and is testament to the hard work of the players and coaches.

“Playing at the Principality Stadium was a dream come true for our players, having the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of their heroes. I am sure many of the players are destined for a bright future in rugby.”
