Senedd Member Delyth Jewell has ruled herself out of the running to become Plaid Cymru’s next leader.

Ms Jewell, who represents the South Wales East region, tweeted: “Diolch to those who’ve asked me about the Plaid Cymru leadership. Your kind words are humbling.

“I will not be putting my name forward. I look forward to working with the new leader for the good of our communities, and for Wales.”

Plaid Cymru is currently searching for a new leader after Adam Price’s resignation.

Price, who had led the party since 2018, stepped down as leader earlier in May after the damning ‘Project Pawb’ report highlighted a “culture of harassment, bullying and misogyny” within the party.

Ms Jewell, from Ystrad Mynach, had been seen by some as one of the frontrunners to succeed Mr Price.

She first became a Senedd Member in 2019 following the death of Steffan Lewis, and was re-elected as a regional member in the 2021 Senedd Election.

Ynys Mon Senedd Member Rhun ap Iorwerth, who unsuccessfully ran for the Plaid leadership in 2018, has put his name forward to lead the party.

Mr ap Iorwerth has been backed by South Wales East MS Peredur Owen Griffiths.

I welcome the announcement that @RhunapIorwerth will be standing as the next leader of @Plaid_Cymru

Dyma fy neges o gefnogaeth i Rhun wrth iddo gyhoeddi ei fwriad i sefyll am arweinyddiaeth Plaid Cymru.

A new permanent leader is expected to be in place by the summer, with nominations for the leadership closing on June 16.

Llyr Gruffydd, who represents the North Wales region in the Senedd, is currently serving as the party’s interim leader.
