Rhun ap Iorwerth MS
Rhun ap Iorwerth MS is the only confirmed candidate for the Plaid Cymru leadership

Adam Price’s successor as Plaid Cymru leader will be announced on Friday June 16, the party has confirmed.

Price, who had led the party since 2018, stepped down as leader earlier in May after the damning ‘Project Pawb’ report highlighted a “culture of harassment, bullying and misogyny” within the party.

Llyr Gruffydd, who represents the North Wales region in the Senedd, is currently serving as the party’s interim leader.

Ynys Mon Senedd Member Rhun ap Iorwerth is currently the only confirmed candidate for the leadership and is expected to take on the role.

South Wales East MS Delyth Jewell had been seen by some as one of the frontrunners to succeed Mr Price, but has ruled herself out of the running.

Her fellow South Wales East MS Peredur Owen Griffiths has voiced his support for Mr ap Iorwerth’s leadership bid.

I welcome the announcement that @RhunapIorwerth will be standing as the next leader of @Plaid_Cymru

Dyma fy neges o gefnogaeth i Rhun wrth iddo gyhoeddi ei fwriad i sefyll am arweinyddiaeth Plaid Cymru.

Mr ap Iorwerth previously stood for the party’s leadership in 2018, where he was defeated by Mr Price in a contest that also included the then-incumbent leader Leanne Wood.

A Plaid Cymru spokesperson said: “Plaid Cymru members will have the opportunity over the next week to nominate candidates for the party leadership through their local constituencies.

“The next leader of Plaid Cymru will be announced on Friday 16th June.”
