Damage to the pavement on Duffryn Road following the spill

Debris spilling from a HGV lorry forced a road closure in Brynawel, Wattsville this morning.

Cargo from the lorry fell off onto Duffryn Road at around 10.05am on Friday June 5.

The road was closed for a short while for the vehicle to be recovered, Gwent Police confirmed.

Ynysddu independent councillor Janine Reed, whose ward includes Wattsville, said it was “incredible no one was hurt”, and added: “The accident has caused traffic chaos.”

In April, residents of Brynawel and Wattsville held a meeting to discuss the safety, noise and pollution issues they say are linked to round-the-clock lorry movements in the area.

Cllr Reed and her ward colleague, Cllr Jan Jones, have previously said “urgent action” was needed to improve road safety for residents “before someone is seriously hurt”.
