Views sought as Newbridge set for £3.8m development

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:45, Thursday July 29th, 2010.

Residents are to be asked for their views on a proposed £3.8 million development of Newbridge.

The development will take place over the next four years after funding from the Welsh Assembly and European Union.

A plan outlining the proposed changes has been drawn up by Caerphilly County Borough Council.

The centrepiece of the scheme will be an overhaul High Street, making it more pedestrianised in a bid to attract more shoppers and visitors.

Plans also public art, more offices on the Gateway site on the edge of town and creating a ‘Culture and Heritage quarter’ with the Memorial Hall and Institute – which this week was awarded £2.9m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Under the plans an area below the A472, where a former coal spoil heap has been removed, will be transformed into a park. A walkway and cycle route will also be built to link the town with Abercarn.

A public consultation on a draft Town Centre Action Plan is being held between August 2 and 22 which will give residents a chance to have their say on the plans.

An exhibition will be on display at Newbridge Memorial Hall for three weeks. Officers from the council will be on hand to answer any questions on:

  • Monday August 9 at 7.30pm
  • Wednesday August 11 between 3.30pm and 6.30pm
  • Saturday August 14 at 1pm

For further information on the exhibition call 01495 235 067.
