Local residents, businesses and school children collected two lorry loads of litter and waste from around Newbridge as part of the Big Spring Clean campaign.
Taking place throughout March, April and May, the council-backed campaign encourages residents of all ages to grab their litter pickers, wheelbarrows and spades and head outdoors to help give our area a clean-up before the summer.
Children from Newbridge School joined forces with the council’s Tidy Towns Team and Keep Wales Tidy to clear the walkway under the Calzaghe Bridge of litter and waste, while staff from the Newbridge McDonalds did their bit by picking up litter around the restaurant and the business park.
Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “I would like to thank the community of Newbridge for their support and endeavours which have helped to make a difference to the cleanliness and attractiveness of the area.
“Even though the council works all year round cleaning the roadsides and town centres, there are areas of land that need special attention.
“The Big Spring Clean Campaign is continuing to spark interest in local communities and our Council workforce is committed to helping out where it can. We have now amassed over 36 tonnes of litter and waste as part of this spring clean initiative. In addition our enforcement team is also undertaking surveillance on hot spot areas to reinforce our zero tolerance approach to littering and dog fouling offences.”
