Cyclist killed in minibus collision in Newbridge

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:52, Monday July 22nd, 2013.

A cyclist has died following a collision with a minibus in Newbridge.

Police are appealing for information following the fatal collision on the A472 at Newbridge on Sunday July 21 at about 8.05pm. Police have been unable to identify the cyclist.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Despite extensive enquiries to identify the man, officers have been unable to and are asking for anyone who recognises the description of the bike and the clothing the man was wearing to come forward.

“At the time of the incident the man was riding a grey-coloured Raleigh Pioneer Venture drop handled road bike. It has mudguards and fulcrum racing wheels and pannier brackets front and rear. The man was wearing grey shorts, white Nike trainers and a red long sleeved Paratech top.”

The cyclist and minibus were travelling in the same direction towards Newbridge when the incident happened.

The male cyclist was taken to the University of Wales Hospital Cardiff with serious injuries where he later died.

A 43-year-old who was the driver of the minibus was uninjured and has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and is in police custody at this time.

There were two other people in the minibus at the time of the incident and they were also uninjured.

If anyone has any information about the incident they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 and quote log number 575 21/7/13

Travelling in the same direction – in most other countries the driver would be presumed guilty in this sort of case – as they have obviously not given due care and attention – but without witnesses another dangerous driver will probably get away with using their vehicle as a weapon!
