A custody sergeant who allegedly had sex with a female suspect has been fired by Gwent Police for gross misconduct.

Sergeant Richard Evans, 46, who was based at Ystrad Mynach Police Station, was dismissed without notice following a Professional Standards hearing.

The hearing was held on January 30 and upheld 41 allegations, of which 32 were gross misconduct, and involved “inappropriate sexual behaviour” towards female detainees and colleagues.

It followed a court case in August 2014 which acquitted Evans of three counts of sexual assault and two of misconduct in public office.

Deputy Chief Constable of Gwent Police Craig Guildford said: “Richard Evans’ attitude and behaviour was disgraceful, he abused his authority when dealing with female colleagues and female detainees. He failed to treat them with courtesy and respect, and failed to have regard to the equality and diversity duty in the workplace. His immediate dismissal was the only appropriate course of action.”

DCC Guildford added: “Events and investigations like this are thankfully rare in policing, but even one is too many. If anyone has concerns about the behaviour of any Gwent Police staff or officers I would encourage them contact the Gwent Police Professional Standards Department.”

IPCC Commissioner Jan Williams said: “Sergeant Evans displayed wholly inappropriate behaviour towards both vulnerable female detainees while in custody, and to female colleagues, and I am pleased he is no longer able to abuse the position of trust he held.

“I give credit to Gwent Police for their diligent and determined investigation into his behaviour, and for reaching this fitting conclusion where he can no longer be a part of the police service.

“The dismissal should send a message to any police officer that the sort of behaviour shown by this sergeant is utterly unacceptable, and bring confidence to colleagues who witness anything like it to report their concerns.”

The investigation was initially overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission which decided it should be investigated locally.
