A man described as a “menace to the roads” has been jailed for 20 months.

Martin Davies, 36, of Hill View, Pontllanfraith, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, September 9, and was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

The court was told how Davies, a father-of-three, was driving an Audi with false number plates on February 29 this year.

He failed to stop for police in Manmoel and officers gave chase.

Davies sped to Argoed, where police deployed a stinger to deflate the car’s tyres. He abandoned the car and fled with officers pursuing on foot. However, Davies managed to escape.

That night he reported his vehicle as stolen and following officers attending his address he was identified as the driver and arrested.

Davies pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to two counts of disqualified driving, perverting the course of justice, driving with no insurance and driving without due care and attention.

During the court hearing, his defence team said Davies possessed poor cognitive skills, was weak at problem solving and lacked impulse control.

The court was also told that Davies had previous driving convictions while disqualified.

Sentencing him, Recorder David Miller said: “You’re a menace to the roads. You dishonoured the trust of community orders and offended on bail in the past.”

As well as being handed a 20-month sentence, Davies was banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge.
