Plans to redevelop the site of Caerphilly town’s former police station into a complex of retirement flats have been unveiled.

The site, on Mountain Road, has been empty since Gwent Police closed its doors on the base in 2011.
Developer McCarthy and Stone is proposing to build 43 “high-quality” one and two-bedroom retirement apartments. The company said it believes there is a strong need for this type of specialist retirement accommodation across Caerphilly and that the development would significantly increase housing choices for older people.

It will be exhibiting its proposals at an open day at the Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community on Thursday, May 11, between 3pm and 7pm.

Simon Mantell, Regional Managing Director at McCarthy and Stone, said: “We want to hear from the local community and our future home-owners before we finalise our plans.

“We will be displaying our plans and ideas at a public exhibition where our project team will be on hand to answer questions and listen to feedback on what we have done so far.”

He continued: “Our proposal provides an important opportunity to deliver a sensitive residential development that will significantly improve the housing choices for retirees in Caerphilly. What’s more, residents of retirement apartments are typically looking to ease the burden of maintaining a larger family property, which releases existing family houses back into the local market for younger families.”
