Historic village pub saved and transformed into affordable homes in Oakdale

News | Gareth Axenderrie | Published: 10:00, Friday July 20th, 2018.

The Oakdale Hotel had fallen into a state of disrepair and residents were becoming increasingly worried about its future

Work to transform a historic pub in Oakdale into nine affordable apartments has been completed after a £1.7million development.

The Oakdale Hotel, a three-storey Grade II listed building, has been developed through a partnership between Caerphilly County Borough Council, Pobl Group and Welsh Government.

Roger Evans, Secretary of Oakdale and Penmaen Community Partnership, said: “We are delighted with the quality of the finished development, both inside and out.

“We became concerned about what is an iconic building in the centre of the village, as it fell into a poor state and hadn’t been secured against vandalism and trespass.

“The restoration project has been very well received by the community here as the building has retained its character while providing much-needed affordable housing. The project has enhanced the centre of the village.”

Rebecca Evans, Welsh Government Minister for Housing and Regeneration, said: “This is a fantastic development. Not only has it created more affordable housing, but it has created apprenticeships and supported the construction industry locally.

“We have made a commitment to deliver 20,000 affordable homes during this term of government, and this is an excellent example of how Pobl, Caerphilly Council and the Welsh Government have worked together to make a difference.”

Proposals were first passed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s planning committee on February 2016, and the £1.7 million redevelopment includes the building of three 3-storey houses, built in the grounds of the hotel.

Neil Taylor, Senior Project Manager, said “We realised from the outset that the Oakdale Hotel held a special place in the hearts of the local community and are delighted to have created such beautiful high quality homes, whilst paying homage to its significant history.

“We are extremely proud of what we have collectively achieved at Oakdale House and feedback indicates the new tenants feel exactly the same way.”
