A village that developed after the opening of the Bedwas Navigation Colliery just before Word War I on the land of the local colliery owner, Sir William James Thomas (1867-1945) and later Baron Ynyshir, who was a native of Caerphilly and benefactor to the Royal Infirmary in Cardiff.
