Emergency services attend the scene of the stabbing on Bedwas Road

Police have stepped up patrols in Caerphilly town to ease fears following two recent stabbings.

Superintendent Carl Williams, the deputy commander for the west area of Gwent Police, which covers Caerphilly County Borough, said: “Understandably, there is increased concern within the community about recent incidents in Caerphilly, especially during this public health crisis.

“A number of arrests have been made and these investigations are continuing.

“Knives have no place in our communities and tackling knife crime and serious violence continues to be a priority for us and our partners.

“We’ve carried out high-visibility patrols in the area to assist us in our investigations and we will continue to have an increased police presence throughout Caerphilly town.

“I would urge anyone with information about individuals involved in knife crime to please get in contact with us on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always dial 999.”

Stabbings in Caerphilly town took place on Thursday, May 28, and Sunday, May 31. The two incidents were unrelated.

The first attack happened at around 8.50pm near Caerphilly Castle in Dafydd Williams Park.

Scott Chamberlain, 23, of Nantgarw Road, Caerphilly, has appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of a bladed article, namely a knife, in a public place.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Newport Crown Court on June 29.

A 26-year-old man suffered stab wounds to the abdomen. He was taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and is currently in a stable condition.

The second attack on Sunday happened at around 8pm on Bedwas Road close to Morrisons garage, near Lansbury Park.

Police said a 40-year-old man was stabbed in the neck with what is believed to have been a glass bottle.

Two men, a 30-year-old and a 29-year-old, were arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of robbery and assault.

Both have been released pending further investigation.

The victim, who has been released from hospital, had a mobile phone and a bike stolen. Police said the mobile phone has since been recovered.
