Driver jailed after 90mph car chase through Caerphilly town

JAILED: Lee Stevens, of Energlyn

A driver who sped through the streets of Caerphilly town at speeds of up to 90mph has been handed a six-month sentence behind bars.

Lee Stevens, 25, of Diamond Close, Energlyn, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance, when he appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, January 6.

The court was told how Stevens was driving his black Ford Fiesta along Bedwas Road at around 4.55am on Sunday, October 9 last year and failed to stop for police.

He accelerated down the road with police giving chase and eventually lost control of the car, flipping it.

Stevens ran off but was later arrested. He was found with a grazed head and walking with a limp. Blood on the car’s deployed airbag was later found to match his.

In addition to the six-month jail term, Stevens, whose defence argued was under stress and suffering from attention deficit disorder, was also given a 39-month driving ban.

Judge Neil Bidder, QC, said: “Quite frankly given the speed you were travelling it’s a miracle that no-one was hurt.

“You have to be kept off the road for a substantial about of time. You are not trustworthy with cars.”

PC Spencer Clease, of Gwent Police, who was in charge of the case, said: “Stevens failed to stop for officers when driving at high speed in the Caerphilly area.

“He showed no regard for the safety of other road users, and it was extremely fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured as a result of his actions.”

Another knuckle dragger who’s mindless idiotic actions result in high insurance premiums for the rest of us. How does a disqualified uninsured driver get back behind the wheel of car, if anybody is caught driving whilst disqualified then the vehicle should be taken away and crushed. It’s about time we adopted the same practice as that on the Channel Islands where vehicle insurance must be displayed in the windscreen.
